About MRCPI and Part II Written/OSCE/Clinical Examination

MRCPI Obstetrics & Gynaecology is considered as the foremost knowledge-based assessment for OBGYNs in Ireland, readying candidates to enter Higher Specialist Training – the final training before starting independent practice.
MRCPI O&G Part II consist of 2 parts – Written and OSCE/Clinical examinations.
The Part II Written is a 3-hour exam of a single paper with 100 questions in the SBA format.
The Part II OSCE/Clinical exam consists of two parts – Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and a Clinical Exam.

Part II Written Examination

Eligibility

One of the following qualifications is necessary for being eligible to apply for O&G Part II Written

  • MRCPI Part I (General Medicine or Paediatrics) obtained within last six years

  • MRCOG Part I (exemption from MRCOG Part I is not accepted)

  • MRCOG Part I (exemption from MRCOG Part I is not accepted)

  • MRACOG (Australia)

  • MRNZCOG (New Zealand)

  • FCOG (SA)

  • FCPS (O and G) (Pakistan)

  • MRANZCOG

  • MMed (O and G) (Malaysia) – 2008 onwards only

There are limited places for the Part II Written exam, and the places are allotted based on certain priorities.

MRCPI O&G is based on the Basic Specialist Training O&G of RCPI. Candidates must refer to the BST curriculum too while preparing for MRCPI O&G. Both these documents are uploaded on the RCPI site, and student should visit these documents regularly for updated versions.

Exam Pattern

Part II Written Examination consists of 100 questions in the Single Best Answer style. There is no negative marking, so candidates must try to answer every question. The exam is of 3 hours duration.
Candidates must clear the Part II Written within 6 attempts. Any further attempts will be allowed after providing required educational evidence.

Part II OSCE/Clinical Exam

Exam Pattern

Part II consists of 2 components – OSCE and Clinical

OSCE
There are 7 stations of 10 mins each. The stations assess your O&G knowledge and understanding, and clinical skills in problem solving, diagnosis, investigation, treatment and communication. There will be atleast one rest station – a short break for you to prepare for next station

Clinical Exam
There will be 1 long case in either Obstetrics or Gynaecology. There will be 25 minutes with the patient for history taking and examination, which will be fully observed by two examiners. Candidates will then discuss the case with the examiners.

Candidates must clear the Part II OSCE/Clinical within 6 attempts. Any further attempts will be allowed after providing required educational evidence.
